  • Nordic Ware Extra Large Baking Tray with Rack – I use this pan multiple times a week! It’s great for roasting chicken and veggies, all at the same time! It’s huge and it has a rack that fits right in there for meat you want to roast and broil!
  • Instant Read Meat Thermometer – You really need a meat thermometer to know when larger cuts of meat are done cooking. This one is my favorite that I’ve had so far!
  • Basting Brush – I love this basting brush. It’s perfect for everything from brushing butter on to baked treats to putting bbq sauce on meat on the grill!

Ingredients

  • Chicken Drumsticks – I usually use 8–10 drumsticks, depending on the size of the pack. They’re inexpensive and stay juicy and tender in the oven.
  • Salt – A generous sprinkle helps bring out the natural flavor of the chicken.
  • Black Pepper – Adds just a touch of heat and depth.
  • BBQ Sauce of Choice – Use your favorite bottled BBQ sauce or a homemade version. Sweet, smoky, tangy—whatever your family loves! Use my homemade recipe for Sweet and Smoky Apple BBQ Sauce! My favorite barbecue sauce in a bottle is Jack Daniels Sweet & Spicy BBQ Sauce.

Substitutions, Modifications, and Additions

You can absolutely customize this recipe depending on what ingredients you have on hand or your dietary needs.

Substitutions

  • Chicken thighs or chicken wings – If you don’t have drumsticks, you can use bone-in thighs or a pack of chicken wing instead—just adjust the cooking time as needed. Chicken breasts are totally fine too!
  • Low-sugar BBQ sauce – Watching your sugar? Use a reduced-sugar or keto-friendly BBQ sauce.

Modifications

  • Gluten-Free – Make sure your BBQ sauce is certified gluten-free, and you’re good to go!
  • Dairy-Free – This recipe is naturally dairy-free! (So long as your BBQ sauce is dairy-free!)

Additions

  • Spice it up! – Add a sprinkle of smoked paprika or chili powder for extra flavor before baking.
  • Garlic powder or onion powder – Season the drumsticks with a bit more flair before baking for added depth.

Step-by-Step Instructions

This is such a simple recipe. Here are the instructions for how to cook this BBQ chicken recipe!

Preheat. Start by preheating your oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with foil and add a wire rack if you have one (this helps the chicken cook evenly).

Dry & Season. First thing, pat your drumsticks dry with a paper towel to help the skin crisp up. Then, season all sides with salt and pepper.

Bake. Brush on a very light coating of BBQ sauce. Place the drumsticks on the baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes, flipping them halfway through. If you have a baking rack to go on the baking sheet, I like to put the chicken on that.

Add More BBQ Sauce. Remove the chicken from the oven and brush on a generous layer of BBQ sauce on all sides.

Return to Oven. Bake for another 10 minutes to allow the sauce to get sticky and caramelized.

Broil (Optional). For extra sticky goodness, broil the drumsticks on high temperature for 2–3 minutes—but watch closely so they don’t burn!

Assemble and Serve. Let the chicken rest a few minutes before serving. Get those napkins ready!

Air Fryer Instructions for BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

These BBQ drumsticks are also great made in the air fryer! Here’s what you do to use your air fryer for this recipe!

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for about 3–5 minutes. (Some models don’t require preheating—check your manual.)
  2. Pat dry and season. Use paper towels to pat the drumsticks dry—this helps them crisp up nicely. Season all sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Air fry the drumsticks. Place drumsticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket. (You may need to cook in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.) Cook at 400°F for 18–20 minutes, flipping halfway through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F.
  4. Add BBQ sauce. Brush the drumsticks with BBQ sauce on all sides, then return to the air fryer for 3–4 more minutes at 400°F to let the sauce set and get slightly caramelized.
  5. Serve and enjoy! Let them rest for a couple of minutes before serving.

Air Fryer Tips

  • Don’t overcrowd the basket—air circulation is key to crispy skin!
  • Flip the drumsticks halfway through for even browning.
  • Use a meat thermometer to double-check for doneness—165°F is the goal.
  • If your BBQ sauce has a lot of sugar, keep an eye on it during the final minutes so it doesn’t burn.

Tips and Notes

  • Patting the chicken dry before seasoning helps the skin get crispy in the oven.
  • If you don’t have a wire rack, you can place the chicken directly on foil—but flip it carefully halfway through.
  • Broiling at the end is optional but makes the BBQ sauce sticky and delicious.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is fully cooked—it should reach 165°F internally. My instant-read thermometer is such a help for making sure my chicken is done! Every cut of chicken is different so it’s useful to know for sure when the chicken is all done and safe to eat.

Serving Suggestions

  • Side Dish – We need classic BBQ sides for this dish! Serve with roasted veggies, potato salad, mashed potatoes, pasta salad, baked beans, a simple salad, or coleslaw.
  • Bread/Rolls – Pair with cornbread muffins, garlic bread, or dinner rolls.
  • Dessert Idea – Finish with a classic dessert like lemon pound cake, lime sherbet, or an ice cream float for that Southern comfort food vibe.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

Storage

  • Refrigerator – Store leftover drumsticks in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer – You can freeze cooked drumsticks for up to 3 months. Wrap tightly and store in a freezer-safe bag or container.

Reheating

  • Oven – Reheat in a 350°F oven for 10–15 minutes until warmed through.
  • Microwave – Reheat on a microwave-safe plate in 30-second intervals until hot.
  • From Frozen – Let drumsticks thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I use boneless chicken for this recipe?

Sure! You can use boneless chicken thighs or breasts, but reduce the cook time to avoid drying them out.

What’s the best BBQ sauce to use?

Whichever one your family loves! Sweet Baby Ray’s is a classic, but there are great options for smoky, spicy, or tangy flavors, too.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Absolutely! Bake and sauce the chicken, then store it in the fridge. Reheat and broil just before serving for best results.
