There’s something so comforting about homemade muffins straight from the oven. I’ve always loved baking with apples, and this recipe was born from a craving for something sweet, spiced, and bakery-worthy, without the trip to the bakery. These muffins hit all the right notes, and my family devours them as soon as they’re cool enough to eat. The streusel topping is my favorite part; I just love it.

- Flat Whisk – I adore this OXO Good Grips Flat Whisk. If I couldn’t have anything else in the kitchen, THIS is the gadget I’d keep.
- Glass Mixing Bowls – This is a nesting set of glass bowls. I find I can’t have enough glass bowls in my kitchen!
- Muffin Pan – Standard Size – This is a standard size muffin pan and it makes 12 at a time. It’s Wilton brand, and I LOVE mine. It’s so sturdy and well made!
- Paper Muffin Liners – I like paper muffin liners. I have the silicone ones, and to be honest, they are straight up a huge pain to wash and clean, in my opinion. So I opt for paper muffin liners when I need them!
- Paper Baking Cups – These are my favorite kitchen discovery in a long while. They act just like a muffin liner, except you don’t need the pan. This means no washing a muffin pan, which is a giant win in my world!
- Cooling Rack – These are nice and sturdy cooling racks for all your baking needs!
- Airtight Food Storage Containers – These are fantastic. They keep food air-tight and fresh so well!

Ingredients
This recipe makes 12 large muffins, and I use my 12-cup muffin tin to make them all at ounce.
Crumble Topping (Streusel Mixture)
- All-purpose flour – Acts as the base to bind the crumble together.
- Brown sugar & granulated sugar – A mix of both sugars gives that perfect sweet and slightly caramelized flavor.
- Sea salt – Just a pinch enhances all the sweetness.
- Ground cinnamon – Essential for that warm streusel flavor.
- Butter (cold, in small cubes) – Helps create that crumbly, bakery-style topping.
Muffin Batter
- All-purpose flour – The structure for your muffins.
- Sea salt – Balances the sweetness and enhances flavor.
- Ground cinnamon – For an extra cozy, warm flavor.
- Light brown sugar – Adds moisture and a subtle molasses note. It just gives a little extra to the recipe!
- Eggs – Provide structure and richness.
- Whole milk – Adds moisture and helps create a tender crumb.
- Vanilla extract – Rounds out all the flavors.
- Unsalted butter (melted) – Adds richness and flavor.
- Finely diced apples (Granny Smith recommended) – Tart and crisp apples hold up perfectly during baking. I think Granny Smith is the best baking apple.
- Extra flour (2 Tablespoons) – Coating the apples helps them stay suspended in the batter.
Substitutions, Modifications, and Additions
This recipe is super flexible and can be adjusted to fit your pantry or preferences.
Substitutions
- Apples – Try using pears, peaches, or even blueberries instead. They are all wonderful. But fresh apples just have a special place in my heart. Or stomach. LOL!
- Butter – You can substitute with coconut oil or plant-based butter for a dairy-free version.
Modifications
- Gluten-Free – Use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour for both the batter and the crumble.
- Dairy-Free – Use plant-based milk (like oat or almond) and dairy-free butter alternatives.
Additions
- Chopped nuts – Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble or the batter for a bit of crunch.
- Raisins or dried cranberries – Stir into the batter for extra sweetness and texture.
Step-by-Step Instructions

Make the crumble topping.
In a small bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles clumpy sand.

Preheat oven.
Set your oven to 425°F and line your muffin tin with paper liners or cupcake liners.

Mix wet ingredients.
In a large mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, eggs, milk, and vanilla. Whisk until smooth.

Add melted butter.
Slowly whisk in the melted butter until fully incorporated.

Add dry ingredients.
Stir in the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon, reserving the extra 2 tablespoons of flour.

Prepare apples.
Dice the apples finely and toss the apple pieces with the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour to keep them from sinking in the batter.

Combine batter.
Gently fold the floured apples into the muffin batter.

Assemble muffins.
Fill each muffin cup or muffin liner ¾ of the way with batter. Top generously with a heaping tablespoon of crumble topping for the tops of the muffins.

Bake.
Bake at 425°F for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the tops are golden brown.
Cool and enjoy.
Let the muffins cool slightly in the pan before transferring to a wire cooling rack. The wire rack helps them cool underneath as well as on top. Enjoy warm or at room temperature!
Tips and Notes
- Make sure your butter is cold for the crumble topping—it helps create that perfect crumbly texture.
- Don’t overmix your batter—just stir until combined for tender and fluffy muffins.
- Coating the apples in flour helps prevent them from sinking to the bottom.
- Use a cookie scoop to evenly fill your muffin liners.

- Afternoon Snack: Pair with apple cider for the ultimate fall pick-me-up.

Storage and Reheating Instructions
Storage
- Refrigerator: Store the apple crumb muffins in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. These are best the first day you make them, but the next day I like to heat them in the oven and the tops get cruncy again!
- Freezer: Freeze individually wrapped muffins in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.
Reheating
- Microwave: Heat a muffin for 20–30 seconds until warm.
- Oven: Reheat at 300°F for about 5–7 minutes.
- From Frozen: Let thaw at room temp or microwave directly for 30–40 seconds.

I’ve never met Cinnamon Apple muffins that weren’t delicious, no matter what kind of apple. It’s just a little different apple flavor from apple to apple.
