There used to be a BBQ restaurant here that had a special legendary BBQ sauce called “The Apple Dapple” sauce and it was my favorite BBQ sauce ever. It was sweet and spicy and apple-y, all the good flavors of life! When that restaurant went out of business a few years back, I knew I had to come up with my own version of their apple barbeque sauce! And here we are!!

If you love this great barbecue sauce and all the savory flavors, try it out with our Instant Pot BBQ Babyback Ribs!! Or you could substitute this apple BBQ sauce for our lemonade BBQ sauce in our Lemonade BBQ pork chops recipe! Make sure you get all the good Southern sides for your barbecue too, like our Southern Baked Beans, Smoked Cheddar Mac and Cheese, indulgent twice-baked potato casserole,  and our Classic Southern Deviled Eggs! BBQ is one of my favorite kinds of food!!

  • Immersion Blender – I go to this gadget time and again! It’s so handy for smoothing out and thickening sauces and soups!
  • Santoku Knife – You don’t have to go out and buy a nice knife. BUT, if you were in the market for a knife, this is the one I couldn’t do without, and the one I go for time and time again.
  • Cutting Board – I’ve had these for years and I love them. Mine are red! They are the perfect sizes, easy to store, and have a little groove around the edges to stop juices from flowing all over. This is the cutting board I go to time and time again when I’m cooking.
  • 3-Quart Saucepan – This is what I have at home and I love it. I use it for sauces all the time, but my favorite thing is to put a glass bowl over it and make it a double boiler.
  • Airtight Food Storage Containers – These are fantastic. They keep food air-tight and fresh so well!
Ingredients for Sweet & Smoky Apple BBQ Sauce including apples, applesauce, ketchup, onion powder, sea salt, garlic powder, dark brown sugar, garlic powder, ginger, apple cider vinegar, liquid smoke and apple juice.

Ingredients

  • Ketchup – This is the base of the sauce, adding a rich tomato flavor.
  • Brown sugar – Provides deep sweetness and a hint of molasses.
  • Applesauce – Adds natural sweetness, thickness, and a smooth texture. If you have homemade applesauce, great, and if not, just use some in a jar and it’s perfect too!
  • Apple cider vinegar – Gives the sauce a tangy kick that balances the sweetness. You need that bit of tanginess to round out the sauce flavors! White vinegar will work too, but the apple cider vinegar has that great flavor! If you use white vinegar, maybe add some lemon juice too to get the tang we are looking for in this sauce!
  • Apple juice – Enhances the apple flavor and adds a mild sweetness.
  • Garlic powder – A subtle savory element.
  • Ground ginger – Adds a bit of warmth and depth.
  • Liquid smoke – Provides that classic BBQ smokiness without needing a smoker. Have questions about what liquid smoke even is? Check this article out for explanations!
  • Onion powder – Enhances the overall flavor! This is sweet AND savory!
  • Kosher salt – Balances all the flavors.
  • Gala or Honeycrisp apples – Fresh apple pieces cook down to intensify the fruity sweetness.

Substitutions, Modifications, and Additions

Substitutions

  • Honey instead of brown sugar – Honey is perfect if you want a more natural sweetness.
  • Smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke – If you prefer a natural spice-based smokiness. I like the depth of flavor the smoked paprika lends to the sauce. Sometimes the liquid smoke can be a bit much.
  • Apple Butter – Apple butter is delicious in place of the apple sauce. It just is a little more rich in flavor!
  • Tomato Puree – If ketchup isn’t your thing, you can use tomato puree and/or tomato paste for the tomato portion of the sauce! But I think the ketchup gives the sauce the tang you need! If you use tomato paste, you may need to add some water so you don’t end up with very thick sauce.

Modifications

  • Make it spicier – Add a pinch of cayenne or a diced chipotle pepper.
  • Make it gluten-free – This should be gluten free all on it’s own, but as always, double check your ingredients. (Especially the ketchup!)
  • Make it refined sugar-free – Use honey or maple syrup instead of brown sugar.

Additions

  • A splash of bourbon – Adds a deeper, richer complexity. And it’s SO good.
  • A teaspoon of mustard – Enhances the tangy flavor.
  • Maple Syrup – It’s so delicious and adds a little something extra to the flavors and sweetness.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – This gives a little salty depth to the sauce if you want that!

Step by Step Instructions

Chop: Chop apples into small pieces.

Combine ingredients – Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan over medium heat.

Simmer – Stir occasionally and let the sauce simmer for 20-25 minutes. It will reduce slightly.

Cool and store – Let cool to room temperature before transferring to an airtight container.

Helpful Tips and Notes

  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
  • Let the sauce cool slightly before blending to avoid splatters.
  • For a chunkier texture, blend lightly or mash with a fork instead of pureeing.

Serving Suggestions

  • Meats – This apple BBQ sauce is perfect for pulled pork sandwiches. And it’s amazing on chicken! I love it on grilled chicken.
  • Dips – Add this sauce to a regular ranch or french onion dip and you’ve got a dynamite smoky bbq dipping sauce!

Storage and Reheating Instructions

Storage

  • Refrigerator – Store in an airtight container for up to a week. I like to use mason jars!
  • Freezer – Freeze in small portions for up to 3 months.

Reheating

  • Stovetop/Oven – Warm over low heat, stirring occasionally.
  • Microwave – Heat in short bursts, stirring in between.
  • From Frozen – Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
