Salads are the perfect lunch, but they will turn into soggy salads if you make them ahead of time. But not if you make them in a mason jar! It’s the perfect set up for salad! You put all your dressing and liquid-y ingredients in the bottom of the jar, and all your ingredients you want to stay crispy closer to the top of the jar. And then they don’t mix together until you want them to! Plus, food holds better in glass jars than in plastic containers. And a glass jar is such a great way to enjoy salad on the go and have them be fresh salads all at the same time.

So, what kind of jars do you need for mason jar salads? You want to use wide mouth jars for sure, and I like the quart jars for bigger meal-sized salads. They don’t have to be the Mason jar brand either, the wide-mouth quart ball jars work just as perfectly and are sometimes much easier to find in the store! If you want smaller salads, you can use the pint jars, but definitely make sure any size you use are wide-mouth jars.

Order of Ingredients

It’s important to put the ingredients in your salad in the jar in proper order. It keeps the ingredients from mixing and getting soggy and it also looks super pretty in the jar! The following order is a good roadmap and the best way to prepare your jar recipes. Here’s a full guide on how to properly layer your ingredients if you need it.

First, start with your salad dressing. It can be homemade salad dressing or store-bought, whichever you prefer. The dressing goes into the bottom of the jar.

Wet Ingredients

By wet ingredients, I mean things that are more liquid and not crunchy. This is where your tomatoes (chopped or cherry tomatoes) and cucumbers would go in the jar. If you had any fruits that had lots of juices like mandarin oranges, this is where that would go also.

Crunchy Veggies

The next layers would be your crunchy veggies. This would be ingredients like crunchy carrots, shredded cabbage, red cabbage, bell peppers (red bell pepper is my favorite),  and red onion.

Now it’s time for the heartier ingredients! Add in your rotisserie chicken, tuna, deli meat, quinoa and lentils!

Softer Veggies

Next in the layers would be ingredients like chickpeas, black beans, hard-boiled eggs, or any fruits you want to add to the salad.

It’s finally time for the lettuce in our salad! Add in whatever kind of lettuce or leafy greens you’d like! I am a big fan of romaine lettuce mixed with baby spinach leaves. Feel free to use whatever type of lettuce combination you’d like!

Now for the best part! Add in the cheese!! Use shredded cheese or get some crumbled feta cheese or blue cheese. The sky is the limit! Have whatever kind of cheese you’d like in your salad.

And finally, you’ll want to add in your toppings for the salad. This is where you’ll add in your croutons, sunflower seeds, green onion, nuts, or any other yummy salad toppers.

Serving Your Mason Jar Salad

When it’s time to eat, give your mason jar a good shake, mix up the ingredients with the dressing, then just pour out the salad into a bowl or plate and enjoy!
