We love ice cream of all kinds at our house and I especially love making homemade ice cream. I like knowing all the ingredients that go into our food, and this recipe for lime ice cream could not be simpler, it only has 3 ingredients total! What I love most about this recipe though is that I don’t have to get out any kind of equipment. No ice cream maker, no churn ice cream, no Ninja creami… nothing! Just a mixing bowl and a dish to freeze the ice cream in! I love it when I don’t have to drag out equipment and prep my ice cream machine. This is an easy way to have a fun treat for my family.

If you’re looking for more simple dessert recipes with no baking involved, make sure you try our No Bake Lemonade Cheesecake, The Best Ice Cream Floats, No Bake Sugar Cookie Dough, and our No Bake S’mores mix! I love a quick dessert that I don’t have to even turn on the oven for, especially on a hot summer day! And also, I love the satisfaction of making my own ice cream!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • 3 Ingredients – Seriously – just 3 ingredients. You can’t ask for more simple than that.
  • Flavor Variety – You can mix and match the flavors of this ice cream with the flavor of kool-aid and the flavor of soda you use. It’s SO much fun to see what combinations you can come up with for your ice cream!
  • Inexpensive – This recipe is less than $5 to make for the entire batch. Ice cream is expensive at the grocery store, and this is so easy to make at home!

This recipe is so easy and it doesn’t require anything special for equipment! Here are the items I use:

  • Flat Whisk – I adore this OXO Good Grips Flat Whisk. If I couldn’t have anything else in the kitchen, THIS is the gadget I’d keep. It’s the best whisk I’ve ever had and the flat part of the design is such a game-changer for making things in the pan! I could not recommend this more! This is the only brand I’ve ever had, and I’m a big fan of all the OXO products.
  • Glass Mixing Bowls – This is a nesting set of glass bowls. I find I can’t have enough glass bowls in my kitchen!
  • Ice Cream Scoops – Multiple Sizes – I use these all the time for everything but ice cream! I like to make the cookie dough even portions and also the small scoop is perfect to measure out fudge or truffles!
  • Glass Baking Dish – I use these dishes all the time. They are perfect to bake in as well as store food. I love a dish that pulls double-duty!
The 3 ingredients for lime kool aid ice cream including a Sprite bottle, a pack of lemon lime kool aid and a can of sweetened condensed milk

Ingredients

  • Sweetened Condensed Milk – Just a 14-ounce can will do the trick!
  • Sprite or 7-up – Or whatever flavor soda matches with your Kool-Aid flavor selection. For lime ice cream I used Sprite for the lemon-lime flavor.
  • Kool-Aid Powder Packet – whatever flavor you like, and for this recipe I used lime Kool Aid. It should be the little packets that are unsweetened kool aid. Don’t get the kind with sugar already added in.

Substitutions, Modifications, and Additions

Here’s where the real fun begins! There are SO many combinations of flavors you could make with this ice cream! Use your imagination, the sky is the limit!

Substitutions

  • Sugar Free Soda – Sugar-free soda works fine for this recipe too. There is more than enough sugar in the sweetened condensed milk to make the mixture plenty sweet enough!
  • Flavor Mix – You can use any flavor of Kool-Aid (or similar drink mix) that you want! Pick whatever flavor you’d like! Just make sure it’s the unsweetened Kool-aid.

Modifications

  • Gluten-Free – As always, check your ingredients for yourself, but as is, this recipe should be gluten-free! I love it when no modifications are needed!
  • Dairy-Free – Make an easy swap of your sweetened condensed milk for sweetened coconut condensed milk and you’re good to go!

Additions

  • Fruit – Feel free to add fruit pieces into the mix to freeze, or just put them on top for serving.
  • Toppings – You can top this ice cream with anything you like. I usually make it plain with nothing mixed in and then serve it with toppings so everyone can get exactly what they like and want.

Favorite Flavors

Here are some of the fruity flavor combinations that I know are incredibly tasty because we have tried them! Try these the next time you make this recipe to satisfy your sweet tooth!

  • Pineapple – Pineapple Kool-aid and Pineapple Fanta soda – delicious like a Dole Whip!
  • Orange – Orange Kool-Aid and Orange Soda – Like Orange Sherbert!
  • Tropical Punch – Tropical Punch Flavor Kool-Aid and either Lemon-Lime Soda or Pineapple Soda
  • Cherry – Cherry Kool-Aid powder and Cherry soda

You could make it blue with some blue soda the blue raspberry Kool-aid and call it “Cookie Monster Ice Cream”! I haven’t tried that but it sounds fun for the little ones!

There are so many more that I’ve not even tried yet! But these are all delicious! It’s also fun to make a batch of different flavors, so you could have pineapple, lime, and orange at the same time and make your own kind of rainbow sherbert. The different flavors of ice cream are really fun to make and enjoy. Let me know what you try! I love to get recipes from you guys!

Step by Step Instructions

Combine: In a glass bowl, mix condensed milk and Kool-Aid packet and stir to combine.

A glass mixing bowl with all the lime ice cream ingredients added and it is foamy as the Sprite carbonated drink has been added.

Add: Slowly add in 16 ounces of Sprite or 7-Up and gently stir to combine.

The mixture for the lime kool-aid ice cream in the container and ready to go into the freezer.

Pour: Pour the ice cream mixture into a larger shallow baking dish. Make sure it’s freezer-safe. I just use a glass baking dish. A loaf pan also works great here.

Freeze: Put in the freezer for 4 hours at minimum in a freezer-safe container. Cover the ice cream with plastic wrap.

Tips and Notes

  • Freezer Time – 4 hours is the minimum time that the ice cream needs to set up. I find 6-8 hours is even better.
  • Plastic Wrap – I like to cover the ice cream in the dish with plastic wrap, right on the surface of the ice cream so there is no air in between the ice cream and the plastic wrap. That way there is no freezer burn or extra ice crystals.

Serving Suggestions

Serve in a bowl or an ice cream cone! Mix in some toppings! Use your imagination for your ice cream treats!

Storage

  • Freezer – Store leftovers in the freezer for up to 5 days for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I just use milk instead of the sweetened condensed milk?

You can! You can use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream too! But, you need to add about 3/4 a cup of sugar if you go that route. Kool-Aid isn’t sweetened and it’ll taste really bitter if you don’t get some sweetness in there somewhere.

Is there a way to make this without milk at all?

Feel free to use any kind of milk alternative you’d like! Just make sure it’s sweetened or that you add some sugar. You can buy sweetened condensed coconut milk these days, or there are easy recipes to make your own. Plus the coconut makes the ice cream delicious! Just keep in mind any of these alternatives will change the flavor of the ice cream, but not in a bad way! Almond milk and coconut milk are delicious additions!!
